  1. https://search.synopackage.com/sources is up to date will all third party repositories

Config file editor 1.6 is a must have, from https://search.synopackage.com/sources/synologyitalia [http://www.mertymade.com/syno/#cfe v1.4 doesn't work on recent dsm]

    - go at last option in drop down menu to add files to it
    - add the lines like "/usr/syno/etc/packages/feeds,3rd Party Package provider"

    - save and restart the app.

    - Go to "3rd Party Package provider" and sources can be copied/pasted in one go:

  2. i played with dmesg and managed to not use dummy sata ports using internalportcfg and enable bios settings, dmesg seemed better but the issue is still present... I tried including testmem in syslinux menu but it can't load com32 file (not com32r so prob 3.x version but not 4+)

Since ssh give the same ping no longer working (box can ping itself by ip and name but no more network ping works) i can only assume the realtek 8168 driver crash, but the asus h81i-plus uses RTL8111G which uses r8168 driver

    [ 1.399860] r8168 Gigabit Ethernet driver 8.038.00 loaded

    [ 1.399882] r8168 0000:04:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18

    [ 1.399899] r8168 0000:04:00.0: setting latency timer to 64

    [ 1.399976] r8168 0000:04:00.0: irq 45 for MSI/MSI-X

    [ 1.412782] eth%d: 0xffffc900044b8000, bc:ee:7b:5d:e1:26, IRQ 4

crash was induced by ssh after a day or copy through samba from the nas raid 5 to the nas raid 5 (same volume), reading from or writing to was ok

While i could reproduce and crash on demand i no longer can so must be resolved

last thing i did was the rmmod=r8169 insmod=r8168

Did use gateone (changed default ssh port) and run "dmesg > /volume1/video/dmesg-seem-working.txt" to create dmesg dump and check boot settings, opened with windows wordpad, saved, then opened with notepad to solve the line feed issue.

    Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=0 netif_num=4 syno_hw_version=DS3615xs sn=B3J4N01003 vid=0x1221 pid=0x3234 loglevel=0 vga=0x305 libata.noacpi=1 rmmod=r8169 insmod=r8168

libata.noacpi=1 to solve messages and error i got pointing to ahci and/or acpi

rmmod=r8169 insmod=r8168 to use old driver

  3. Hi, i tried an h200 P19 but xpenoboot freeze while loading an usb3 driver module (xhci_hcd)... using a LSI 9240-8i reflashed in 9211-8i P19 works but if i enable SSH network stops (can from the console pint the local ip and hostname but cannot ping the gateway). same if i copy from the raid 5 (8x4tb hitachi nas) to the raid 5, it loose the ping from my desktop to the nas straight away, while i can copy from and to the nas without issues....

Motherboard: Asus H81I-PLUS (can somebody with the same motherboard post their dmesg log "dmesg > /volume1/video/dmesg.txt")

2x4GB ram crucial (tried with a single dimm, same thing)

    Case: NSC-800

PSU: Seasonic 250w flex atx + adaptor plate

Controller: LSI 9240-8i + 40mm fan + sata to fan connector

Dunno what to do... What's the best way to troubleshoot? tried 3 different usb keys as i thought they were defective...

sata_syno_ahci_diskled_set? tried removing sata 2.5" disk on motherboard, same freeze. tried switching from ahci to compatible ide but only saw 3 disks from my raid then...

  4. Posted about that a long time ago.

Convert the hexadecimal value in binary with programmer calculator in windows

From the right (port 1) it indicate if the port is used with a 1 and 0 otherwise but can't be both.

Ports will start at internal ones then esata if on board then pci/pcie controllers. Ports will shift if you disable some on motherboard so enable all ports you might latter use...

Once you have your port binary map convert to hexadecimal and put 0x in front... USB ports would be after the internal and external ports

    couldn't see a way

  6. Thanks JasonWu for the information and also thanks to the tutorial at http://homeservershow.com/hp-proliant-n40l-microserver-build-and-bios-modification-revisited.html. From that stems the following info:

The MicroServer's port multiplier (PM) support is command-based switching (CBS) only, but not frame-based [aka FIS-based] switching (FBS), which is more time- and bandwidth-efficient. With the bios Hack both the eSATA port and the on-motherboard SATA port have PM support, and can be used concurrently.

Bios settings to set after bios mod:

. OnChip SATA Channel = "Enabled"

. OnChip IDE type = "IDE" instead of "IDE LEgacy"

. Sata IDE Combined Mode = "Disabled" sets Ports 4 (esata) & 5 (optical) to use AHCI (Starting port count at 0, whereas esataportcfg and internalportcfg starts at 1, and starts from the right )

. Data ESP on all PORT = "Enabled" sets all Ports to be external SATA Ports, to enable hot plug, and port multiplier

. Sata Power on all PORT = "Enabled" allow to have new disk plugged in recognised, otherwise unused sata ports will be switched off

The N40l has 6 sata ports (4 sata, 1 eSata, 1 optical Sata) and 6 USB ports.

    . esataportcfg="0x10" (binary 01 0000) (1 eSata ) or "0x30" (binary 11 0000) (2 eSata if using small form factor sata to eSata bracket)

. internalportcfg="0x2f" (binary 10 1111) (5 sata) or "0xf" (binary 00 1111) (4 sata if using small form factor sata to eSata bracket)

. usbportcfg="0xfc1" for 7 usb ports 1 1111 1100 0000. trying to identify the internal USB port to not show the disconnect icon for the usb key

Will update thread after i finish downloading and upgrade to 4.2 again.

  7. had to downgrade, which meant wiping each disk (had 2) as the software is duplicated on each one, and i kept getting errors saying the version installed were too recent until i wiped both. Used version DSM 4.1 v2668 x64 DS3612xs ++ but still can't use esata disks....

will have to revert to DSM 4.1 v2668 x64 DS3612xs (not ++) unless i find a 4.1 link for microserver. i checked nighthawk links but it's 4.2 only...

There is a french guide to install, that also specify the bios settigns.

    http://zeroqi.redirectme.net/proxy/index.php?q=uggc%3A%2F%2Fsbehz.uneqjner.se%2Fuse%2Ferfrnhkcrefbfbub%2FErfrnhk%2Fvafgnyyre-kcrabybtl-cebyvnag-fhwrg_26917_1.ugz

    ***UPDATE***

Setting need to be IDE and not IDE legacy in the bios, my disks are showing back (using 4.1++) but when modifying the conf files, dissapear from the disk management.

Fear not, on reboot they are showing as eSata as they should

Gift: sickbeard custom can supports anime if using "git://github.com/lad1337/Sick-Beard.git" and "anime"

  8. Here is a description of my upgrade to 4.2, which didn't lost data (apart non finished torrent downloads)

Upgrade from DSM 4.1 to 4.2/new install

    ======================================

    https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5tpWhEINjUONzhFaEgzazU4aEU&usp=sharing#list thanks to Nighthawk

downloading the pat file, the dsm 4.2 and the module here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5tpWhEINjUONzhFaEgzazU4aEU&usp=sharing#list

Created the usb key with win32diskimager

Ran again Synology Assistant to see the NAS. had to scan twice to see the NAS. told me the ip was taken, so used an alternate one temporarily, but after install reverted to my settings. forgot to remove the key after booting and before imaging, so had to re-image it after the install, and Synology Assistant continued

    Download manager issue

    =======================

Download manager gave "Download service is disabled" in the background, and popup "fail to establish network connection"

    NAS > rm -rf /var/services/pgsql/*

    NAS > /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S20pgsql.sh start

After, "fail to establish network connection".

Stopped and start download manager, then all working, asking default download folder

    USB and other modules

    ======================

Copied to video folder the files and decompressed in same folder the gz, then the tar

Opened with putty a root session on my NAS, use root as login and the admin password: [use putty, ctrl+ins to copy from clipboard]

NAS> mv *.ko /lib/modules/ (this way if files dissapeared, it worked)

Am booting from the usb internal port. i would like to configure it so it wouldn't mount the folder and allow for disconnection...

Seem like in 4.2 it's not an issue before the modules are loaded

NAS > go into root again

    NAS > ipkg update

    NAS > ipkg perl install

After, I could install ipkg GUI

    eSATA ports configuration

    =========================

I used "config File Editor" 3rd party package http://www.mertymade.com/syno/#cfe, and added the /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf, synoinfo.conf entry to the last drop-down menu item, then used it to modify the config file. You have otherwise to log in using ssh as root and use the admin password.

If you mess up something, the interface won't mount, but using putty to SSH into the box will work and you can use "vi" to edit the file and the command "reboot"

    VI commands: http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/Basic_commands_for_the_Linux_vi_Editor

Thanks to "jasonwu" to document the values he used:

    . esataportcfg="0x30"

    . internalportcfg="0xf"

This make BOTH the esata port and the optical port as functional eSata. I use a small form factor sata to esata cable to have two eSata ports (original one + the additional one in place of the optical drive, useless with DSM)

. In retrospect, it means the sata ports start numbering at "1" and coincides with the "Disknumber" in "DSM > Storage Manager > Hdd management"

. Only the first partition is recognized, so you might need to delete the 100mb protective mbr for the partition to mount.

Tested eSata ports at last on my N40L, using Raid 5 10.9TB external storage

. Above 100MB/s through samba from the NAS esata share (NTFS) to my Win 7 ultimate x64 on the C: drive, a Vertex 3, initiated on the windows station

. Above 66MB/s through samba from the esata share to the main Nas HDD share

. "Optimize CIFS database operations" seem to influence little the performance (<10%)

  10. Hi All, I think i know how to enable the eSata ports to behave as external ports now: http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=20661&start=270

i have a Sata to small form factor eSata bracket

. 1) enable the SSH service and login to NAS through SSH.

. 2) go to and edit /etc/synoinfo.conf (you can (must) also edit /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf because idk what file is primary).

For the N40l there is 6 ports, the internal ones are 1(left) to 4 (right). so is left 0 and 5

The easiest to identify the port number is to connect a disk on the ports, look at the port number in the storage manager and generate the masks as below:

    . internalportcfg="0x1e" = 1e (hex) = 00011110 (binary) = four internal SATA ports enabled (on mask 1-4)

    . esataportcfg="0x21" = 21 (hex) = 00100001 (binary)= two ESATA ports (0,5) (because 1-4 internal ICH9R sata ports).
