  1. Definitely Bare Metal for 24x7 operation as you can use some pretty lean H/W specs to keep power usage down. The VM option is great for testing updates etc. Different strokes I guess. If you are a Linux admin and asking the kind of question you do, I see no reason to be confused, you are well ahead of many already. Welcome aboard

    Case Ideas

This ^ Fractal build a work of art.
  3. Update complete, reboot ok, all intact and working as required
  4. the answer is always.....it depends. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9578 Some have had success, others no so much. Good luck
  5. Thank You for quick response! As with lilobzh I have build dates of 11/16/15. Not sure what I should or should not be doing but systems were rebooted since install of "patch" and all is working as designed. I use the systems as general storage and media servers, all local access only. Had a brief issue, now resolved, with 1 user access to share.
  6. Bare in mind the limitations of the RAID calculator. It allows configurations that will not work for you. E.G. you start with 1TB and add 3TB then add 2TB, the calc gives you the math results but if you try it for real you will have the added 2TB disk all by itself whether you use SHR or RAID
  7. Current status - slight confused. I have updated 2 DSM systems to most current level and they are both working fine but based on this thread I dare not reboot of change configs in any way. What impact is expected from this "patch" by Synology?
  8. Just wondering if I am sufficiently paranoid in light of this post ? viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9578#p48424 I have updated 2 DSM systems to most current level and they are both working fine but I dare not reboot of change configs in any way
  9. Update to 5644-1 with no issue. Bare Metal ASRock Server mobo AD2550R/U3S3
  10. Under the turning circle with % shown in middle it says what step the upgrade is in. What is status of update when at 22%.
  11. A long overdue upgrade to a DSM4.3-3180 went without issue. 2 stage upgrade - 1 upgrade to 5.2-5592 base(apps all updated at this stage), upgrade to .2, (reboot) + upgrade to .3 2 direct upgrade to 5644. All settings and apps available and updated Baremetal Zotec intel Atom based MOBO **Edit** - Updated second system, followed the breadcrumbs from earlier update. this time 5022 to 5644 Different Baremetal this time - Asrock AD2550R/USB3 server board +stuff
  12. have you checked the very basic RAID calculator https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator it has limitations but you will get the idea
  13. I have moved the HDD and USB drive to new MB/CPU and it worked 1st time. Intel Atom based mobos for source and target.
  14. The RAID calculator lets you add drive sizes in any order without a caveat explaining the downside of that process. Also not too sure about the accuracy of the RAID calculator on the synology site. (the disclaimers at bottom of their web page are not clear either) My system:- Bare Metal system running DSM 5.1-5022 Update 5 using SHR1 Started life with 2x4TB, added a 5TB drive without issue. It took 60hrs to add the drive and expand FS. Added another 5TB drive expecting to see 13TB of usable(according to RAID Calc). Adding the second 5TB drive took about the same time to check drive but at time of expansion the process started and stopped almost immediately. Rebooted and tried again but no change in result To correct, I followed the same process I have used a few times. Boot to Ubuntu and manually expand VG. This worked but after booting back to DSM I see only 11.63TB of usable capacity. I understand FS and formatting etc overhead but the RAID calculator does not explain this nor does it say after adding a drive of a given size you attempt to add a smaller drive to the same volume it will not be added to the volume, it will build a new volume.
  15. Expansion complete with no problems
  16. I had 2 identical DSM 4.3 based systems, both using same Zotec/Atom MB. One plugged into APC UPS, one plugged into Cyberpower UPS. The system on APC did not recognise the unit but of course still worked but with no reporting of UPS system status or any outages. The system on Cyberpower worked perfectly, reported all outages (surprising number of fluctuations in these parts) and reports how much battery power is left when running on UPS, issues warnings when running low etc.
  17. Be prepared for a lengthy process
  18. Initialization took about 8-10mins Expansion started and has been running about 20 hours as of this post and so far at 25.68% System continues to work without issue and expansion is consistent in progress. I have had issues in the past on an 4.3 system where expansion completed but volume size did not change. Only another 60hpurs to go before we see? (indeed NeoID you helped me to correct that, thanks again)
  19. Answering my own post. Rebooted DSM and drive found and now expanding. Expect this will take quite some time
  20. Slightly different problem here, running DSM 5.1-5022 Update 5 with 2 x 4TB in SHR RAID, added ST50000DM00 (5TB) and nothing. Drive was tested with HD tune Pro prior to install and all was fine. Any input appreciated!
  21. RAID 0. Hope you didn't have anything important on there. Physically the individual disks may be fine but logically you may be toast?. Are all of these individual disks in one RAID 0 array/stripe?
  22. I thought I did but if you missed it. All Clear Current DSM version: DSM 5.1-5022 Update 5 DSM date: 2015/04/22 Status: Your DSM version is up-to-date.
  23. thanks jundar - Update 5 works fine, no special requirements, just let system do the work
