I would like to know this as well. I have a DSM 5.0-4493 and would like to upgrade to the newest version with the least amount of pain.
The model is 3612xs but I noticed the newest XPEnology is now 3615?

I'll be making this jump too. How exactly does one backup these databases? Newbie asking....

Fantastic news! You guys are awesome.

Wow, oskarw, that is just awesome, a start to finish upgrade tutorial, specifically tailored for people like me with headless units. I'll also post this to the SS4200 Google Group where I know others have XPEnology installed as well.
-
I also have 4.2 and want to upgrade to DSM 5.
But I am running an SS4200 without a display (there is no video card) or keyboard (though there are USB ports).
Can this upgrade be done without a display/keyboard, just like Trantor's 4.2 install?
-
Is upgrading from Trantor's 4.2 possible? Or only from 4.3?
And I don't fully understand step 1 -- is the file to be downloaded to any directory on the PC, or the USB key?
-
Has anybody tried to upgrade to 5 beta from 4.2?
Yes, that's exactly what I'd like to know!
-
Interesting ... only runs on 4.3 though. Wonder if it works with 5.0 beta?

Thanks for the detailed steps. Will updated 4.2 v 1.2 to 5.0 beta work as well?
Will all my data be preserved, or will I have to restore from a backup (I use Time Backup)?
If 5.0 fails for me, can I swap my old 4.2 USB key back and get everything back?
I have updated 4.3-3810 to 5.0-4418 .... following this steps:01. Download DSM 5.0-4418 from http://xpenology.trantor.be/xpenology.com/417d8593b25892172333cbd43a428d6a/52e78fb7/XPEnology_DS3612xs_5.0_BETA.7z
02. Extract the file
03. Burn img file with this program https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8476146/qnology/win32diskimager-binary06.rar
04. Eject the USB
05. Shutdown Synology
06. Exchange USB Flash drive with new one ( 5.0-4418 )
07. Power on Synology & DSM will boot normally
08. Launch Synology Assistant on your second PC
09. Click 'Search'
10. If you've done everything correctly you'll see a new 'DiskStation' has been found.
11. Disconnect the USB flash drive from the Synology for this next step
12. Right-click on new 'DiskStation' and choose 'Install'
13. Browse and select the new downloaded version (5.0-4418.pat)
14. Choose a Name for the DiskStation, a new default admin password and IP configuration
15. After installation is complete the DiskStation will reboot automatically.
16. Turn OFF Synology manually now
17. Isert the same USB Flash drive ( 5.0-4418) back into Synology
18. Power on Synology & DSM will boot normally
19. In Synology Assistant click 'Search' again
20. Depending on the name and network config you chose during installation you will see now a DiskStation has been found with the NAME you chose
Probably many of you know that already, but still ...

There's even more info available on the new features in 5.0 here:

Hello,
I was wondering if our XPEnology is subject to this newly revealed glibc vulnerability?

Looks pretty bad now.
