Hi again!! Thank you for being patient with me but holy mother of goat... I am STILL backing up 40TB worth of data.
I've learned that gSuite drive has an upload limit of 750MB/day. I'm currently left with another 6TB worth of data to upload..
Truly apologise but I can't do anything about that upload limit and it's irritating when I discovered that considering I've 1Gb/s up and down speed..
I will definitely update here again.

Well... I'm sorry for not following up here but I've been surged with a number of tasks since then (New year, new KPI).
But here's the thing, it had just occurred to me that I have an active domain with which I can sub for a Gsuite business account for the unlimited storage limit.
From there, I'll back up my whole 40TB of data and do the update worry-free! As of now, I've yet to do so. My apologies...

Hmm... I think i'm all fine in this aspect as i did deploy my Google-fu and came across threads of users who have similar board as mind (AsRock N3150 ITX) installed DSM 6.1.4 with nil issues. Keeping my fingers crossed still though as we all know that the universe can throw a curveball in our way. LoL!

No matter what, your data should not be at risk even on a failed installation because personal data is on a separate partition and it can be accessed through a live ubuntu USB and the partition mounted. I made a tutorial on that as well. Search and you shall find.
I read about this too but I couldn't find any actual evidence if this works for a RAID 5 volume.. Do you happen to have any experience in any way?

Problem is, my data is much too big and therefore not feasible to have them backed up, prior to a clean installation.

Having said that, I think i had started on the wrong foot: I believe you had meant to refer the "loader" as the image (DS3615xs, DX3617xs, DS916+) instead of the loader (v1.02b), right?
Coz the guide on the other thread mentioned just utilising loader 1.02b from v1.02a, right?
Apologies for the many questions as I'm seeking to clarify certain points prior to making my decision; I believe my points are all valid, in the sense that it has not been mentioned elsewhere so far, I hope. Truly sorry if this isn't so...

I'm currently wanting to update my Baremetal Xpenology to the latest (and greatest DSM 6.1.4) but i've a few concerns.
1) On the first page of this guide, you mentioned the following:

-b) or, may i choose instead DS916+ since I'm on the AsRock N3150 itx mobo (Braswell, i believe)?

I tell you that I have a network card plugged into that port. And a syba of 4 mouths in the other. With what I have 8 satas and a link to 2 gb.
And nothing has been disconnected or Lost. Only the speed. The onboard SATA is a litle more fasted

Erm... I don't think a network port is similar to a SATA port?
All periferials plug in pcie port.
The difference is in the number of ports required.
For example, a médium graphic card required 8 And better 16 or more.
This slot is "1 mpcie x1"
This means :
1 -> standard review. in this case arround 2.5 GT/s duplex (you can plug 2 sata3 adaptors but the Max transfer rate be same 1 sata2 )
m-> mini form factor
x1-> number of lanes
The standard pcie slot in the board is
3 pcie x1 i thing.
You can plug 2 SATA3. Or 4 but the Max transfer is 1GB/s same 2 sata3 (a litle bit minus)

Anyway, i guess it would be best then that I cap it at running 2 HDD off it.
But then again, on another thread for the AsRock Q1900-ITX, it seems that utilizing the mPCIe slot would disable 2 out of 4 onboard SATA ports.

I suppose it's not worth exploring it anymore unless someone who actually have attached 2 HDD off the mPCIe slot without any negative effect such as the above.
Looks like i would be needing to sell off my 8x 3TB WD Reds and upgrade to 8x 8TB WD Reds instead. LoL!

sorry to necro this thread but I'm new and don't appear to have the ability PM individuals. Had a question about the half size pcie mini slot on the board. Was wondering if anyone has been successful in finding a NAND storage device that will work with this slot and if so what is the make and model?
This slot is a pcie 1x spec. Non for nand.
But the good news is. that is a 1x mini pcie half sice[emoji5] .
You can push 2 sata 6. Or 2 usb3 . Or a giganet card. And offcourse a wifi ac And alwais a USB 2

Has anyone tested this?
I.e. has anyone tried plugging in a Half-size Mini Pcie to PCIe adapter, and then a suitable SATA card successfully and get it to work (attached to another 1 or 2 HDD off the SATA card)?

Or maybe, an IOCrest / Syba Mini PCI-Express Half Size 2 Port SATA III RAID Controller SI-MPE40095 with 2 SATA HDD attached and working?

I'm just curious, is your SYBA/IOCrest card model SE9235 or SE9215?
From my understanding, your ASRock j1900 mobo only has PCIE2.0 x1, which should only be compatible with SE9215 because SE9235 is PCIE2.0 x2?
Having said that, I believe you would need the SYBA/IOCrest SE9215.
I'm using it with no issues.. on DSM 5.2 still though, if that matters.

Thank you redpineapple! The deciding factor was understanding that PCI-e x1 vs x4 vs x8 bandwidth topic. I understand much better by how the respective bandwidth will affect me in the long run.
I've revised my build as follows:
MB (SoC) - Asrock QC-5000ITX/PH
RAM - 2x8gb RAM Crucial Ballistic Sport
or, RAM - 1x16gb RAM Crucial? It's slightly cheaper and i suppose single channel would mean lower power but will it affect speed in anyway?
PSU: SilverStone 300W SFX
HDD: 2x WD Red 3TB (as add ons to my current 2x WD Red 3TB)
Future upgrade:
PCI-e: LSI-9211-8i SAS (for ability to expand up to 8 HDD)
Case: DS380 or NSC-800
Mooaar!! HDD!

Hmm.... A lot of pointers for me to reconsider my build...
My intention was basically to "upgrade" my current Asustor 202TE to something slightly more powerful with capacity of 8 drives.

Actually, i'm not sure. I'm using my current Asustor 202TE as storage, torrenting, and also as a PMS (although I've set it NOT to do any transcoding even for remote access/viewing). Not sure if it would matter in relation to speed factor?

I'm looking for as low power consumption as possible although I would definitely put it to "sleep" mode when i'm not using it and I'll wake it up via WoL when needed.
Also, it'll have 4x WD Red 3TB for a start, with expansion to a total of 8 drives over time.
An alternative that I've looked at although I'm not too sure if it's worth it:
CPU: i3-6100
MoBo: (?) Mini-ITX
PSU: SilverStone 300W PSU
RAM: 1x4gb Kingston 1600mhz DDR3L
PCI-E: LSI 9211?
Case: NSC-800
Or just go with a similar build as yours(best bang for buck for my usage?) + a separate HTPC for my PMS?

I came across that SoC mobo but figured that a newer N3150 would be better, with lower TDP.
I remembered reading up regarding sore concerns of using a SATA card and it states that there would not be any issue as there are sufficient bandwidth: 3gb/s. Is not correct?
All in all, you're both saying that the backplane of both the DS380 and the NSC-800 allows for hot swapping right?

As i've finally "grown out" of my current Asustor 202TE, I'm planning to build an up to 8-bay XPEnology NAS .
Below are my intended specs, followed by some of my concerns, which I require your advices please:
MB (SoC) - Asrock N3150-ITX
RAM - 1x4gb Kingston 1600mhz DDR3L
PSU: SilverStone 300W SFX
PCI-e: IO Crest 4 Port PCI-e 2.0 x1 Controller Card (for ability to expand up to 8 HDD)
Case: SilverStone DS380
My concerns are,
1) the above hardwares, alright? Yes, i will be booting off a thumbdrive.
2) Seeing that the DS380 case allows hot-swapping, would i be able to do so, with the above hardwares? I'm suspecting not as I would need an SAS?
