    Silly Questions

Ok, I have been running an AMD system since 2011 with 11 drives. Due to heat issues of the drives, pushing 50c, i ordered at 16 bay Rosewill case. For the price, it can't be beat. Now, I am at the point I think I am going to upgrade my server completely. But, I have a few questions, and I want to make sure I am not about to make a stupid bonehead move, so getting a few opinions on this, is probably as wise endevour. Like I said, my old system is an AMD A3 low end cpu, 4 gigs ram with an sas9220-8i flashed to IT mode. I have 11 drives of all various sizes, totaling over 40TB of storage in an SHR1 array. I am looking at an Intel i5-4800 cheapest mobo i can find 8GB ram this time Basically, my use is as follows Plex media server, with local streaming to on average 2-3 clients at a time with 1-2 remote connections with direct play. (My home connection is 1Gbps symmetrical) I run a UniFi controller and a UMNS controller for my Ubuiquti stuff in a docker container each. (this draws on the ram, and while i have reduced it to 512MB, i would like to give it what it really wants, which is 1GB) Other services used are FTP/Sonarr/Couch Potato/NZBGet et Everything runs fine now, with the exception of the ram, but thats not a big deal. My main question is, can i just install the new mobo, cpu and ram, plug the USB drive with Juns102.b in, and boot up my DSM6.2 like normal? If not, what do I need to do. I need to keep my data. I am hoping switching to a new mobo, the sata port issue for 3 drives won't happen like when i migrated to DSM6, they fell out of order, and the array had issues.

    SHR on 6.1.5

OK, I am having a total brain fart here. I am rebuilding a DSM for a buddy who lost 3 drives at once. So everything is being rebuilt from scratch. I cannot remember, if I do a direct install of 6.1, will I be able to access the conf file before setting up the drives, so I can select SHR, or, will I have to install DSM 5.0, setup the SHR, build the array, and then update to 6? I am getting too old.

    DSM 6.1.4 - 15217

So, from what I can tell, two AMD users, 1 worked fine, the other had issues. Shall wait and see other reports from AMD users. SO you AMD users, please report if you did it and reading this. Threads like these are very valuable to us.

This is a quick walkthru for those of you who might have issues with RuTorrent on DSM 6.1 I got mine up and working with some help of about 4 different forums all over the place. So I figured why not put my experience down for others who might run into the same problem. I make NO guarantees it will work for you. This is just what I did, and it worked. This also assumes you have NO torrents in your client, because you will have to uninstall. If you have torrents, figure it out on your own, I don't want to get yelled at. I uninstalled the RuTorrent package. Install webstation Install Apache Server 2.4 Install PHP 5.6 Goto Webstation. General Settings Tab. HTTP Backend server select Apache. PHP select 5.6 Goto Webstation. PHP Tab. Then select PHP Version: 5.6 Enable all 4 options directly under it. Enable all Extensions. UNDER Customize PHP open_basedir I used this formula /tmp:/var/services/tmp:/var/services/web:/var/services/homes:/usr/local/rutorrent:/usr/bin Install RuTorrent Goto Webstation. Virtual Host Tab. Select the rutorrent line. Click edit. Ensure HTTP back-end server is Apache Server 2.4 Ensure PHP is PHP 5.6 Test out install. This is all I did to get it working properly. I tested usiing PHP7, couldn't get it to work. Tested with Nginx, and it worked fine, however, I had issues with Couch Potato and trying to connect.

    DSM 6.1.x Loader

Bare Metal upgrade from 5.2 (2nd last update) to DSM 6.1.3-15152 AMD A4-5300 APU MSI fm2-a75ma-e35 LSI/IBM sas9220-8i 46m0861 Flashed to IT Mode 9 Drives total. Followed the guide to setup 1.02b. Only thing different was the grub file is not on the 30MB partition, its on the 15MB one. Couldn't find anything in my BIOS about C3, and since its a cheap board, assume its just not there. Installed 1.02b no problem, no other prior upgrade path used. Booted fine. worked first time. It downloaded DSM on its own, didn't ask me to upload a .pat file. First issue was my drives are all different order from before. Also, 2 drives didn't show. So SHR was crashed. Mucked around with grub and setting the port mapping. Got it to work. One drive reported crashed, which I believe to be because I had just repaired before my upgrade on DSM 5.2 Had a 3TB drive die. Put this new one in, it repaired and expanded (bigger drive than the one replacing) and within minutes of it being done, I upgraded to DSM 6.1 All I did was pull the crash disk, put into my windows machine, cleaned it, and stuck it back in. Its rebuilding the Raid now. Hopefully, all goes well. I wish I knew how to read my grub config on the USB stick so I can figure out what sata port map formula worked, because I forgot. The LSI card used to show as 1-8 and now its 12-4 in the DSM storage manager.

    DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 4

Got this email from Synology: Dear Synology users, An important update for the DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.1 is released. We suggest users to update your DSM as soon as possible to ensure the integrity of your data. Download the update on your DSM: Control Panel > Update & Restore. An open source issue that’s prone to affect data integrity in rare situations has been identified. Although it only affects a handful of users, users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest DSM 6.1.3 update 4 and conduct RAID scrubbing to avoid running into this issue. The issue may occur only when the following conditions are all met: The server is using RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID F1, or SHR with more than 3 disks. The volume is created on EXT4 file system. The server is running on DSM 6.0.2-8451 and above. If your DiskStation meets the criteria, please conduct the following steps: Upgrade to DSM 6.1.3 update 4 (Download now) Conduct RAID scrubbing. (Learn more) The issue was brought to our attention a few weeks ago when the NAS communities discussed the potential data integrity threat that may occur after a RAID 5 repair. In-house investigation revealed the issue stems from Linux feature known as skip_copy. This open source feature contains a slight design fault that may lead to potential data corruption after a RAID array is repaired from degrade mode. Synology team moved quickly to identify and reproduce the issue, which is resolved in the latest DSM 6.1.3 update. Synology is committed to high standards of data protection and safety. Keeping user information safe has always been our priority. In addition, as a vibrant supporter of Open Source, Synology has reported this issue to the Community. By calling to the attention of the mass community, we seek to join forces with influencers in the field in delivering continuous contribution on data integrity and data protection. Owners with the following models should upgrade their models to the DSM 6.1.3 update 4 as soon as possible:

    Any plans for SRM?

Why not just use Pfsense if you are looking for a real firewall, router etc. This product is just a way to piss into the air and watch your money blow away

I can say it really was just plug and play. I plugged the 8x pcie card into the 16X port, plugged in forward breakout cables from the 9220 to all 8 drives. turned it on, booted right up and worked with no questions asked. Now expanding volume to 25TB

Excellent, I was really hoping it was going to be just that easy. Now to just read up on flashing it

Hello; I am currently running DSM 5.2, with 6 drives, 4 x 3tb and 2 x 5tb. Since my mobo that I use only has 6 SATA ports, I am thinking about adding a LSI 9201 or 9220 card. If I add it, do I have to do anything? Is it plug and play? I have 2 more 5TB drives I want to add. If I install the card, and connect all the current drives, and boot up, will everything work as it did before the card, or will I have to do rebuilding etc? I am hoping to just plug it in, put all the drives on, and start her up, working as it always has. Thanks
