  1. Are you sure? Because choosing xHCI it clearly says support for USB 3? Even still this isn't USB 2 speeds. This is USB 1. In fact I'm pretty sure it's even slower. My router supports USB so is there anyway of copying the files from DSM to a samba share and not the other way around? That way I can achieve the same goal just via a different method. Thanks
  2. There are options as to sleep after X minutes but don't believe there is a schedule. Also from recollection it depends on what hardware you use as to if the settings will stick. That was the case with version 4 anyway (I think).
  3. Hahaha! Good answer. Only reason I'm using ESXi is because I want to use Google music manager and map it to a Syno shared folder. That way any music I download can go straight up into the cloud. If anyone knows how to get Google music manager on the syno without using bootstrap I'm all over it and will give you my wife. You can have her. She can't cook for shit but she's small and pretty so the trade off works.
  4. Morning gents. Just a quickie I guess. Since moving to ESXi and DSM 5 my USB speeds are awful. Last night at 6pm I set off a backup of movie data to a USB drive. This morning at 8am it'd only copied over 350gb. When I was using Trantor's 4.3 (without ESXi) I would have managed well over 1tb by then. Not sure if the problem is ESXi or DSM. My Virtual machine has an xHCI USB controller added. The only way I could get the USB hard drive to work on DSM was to then add a USB device - which showed the external drive. There were no options to set the USB type (1, 2 or 3) Any suggestions? My router has a USB port which if necessary I'm quite happy to plug into that and then copy the data that way but not sure if it's possible to map a drive/ftp from within DSM back out. Thanks in advance
  5. I'm using ESXi 5.5. I'm able to run and schedule SMART tests for the disks from the DSM web GUI. The disks' serial numbers also display within DSM. However, the temperature is shown as 0° C / 32° F what leads some nasty scemd.log entries every two seconds. My solution was just to delete scemd.log which prevents logging until the next reboot (or probably log rotation...). I also might just link scemd.log to /dev/null. bye, Darky Hiya Sorry to hijack the thread but where is this log file? Got the same problem on my ESXi 5.5 installed with DSM 5.0 update 2. More than that when I reboot I get a warming about the hard drive temps. Figured I can find this out and maintain it from ESXi but would like to turn off the log dumping in DSM Thanks
  6. Just to say a big thanks to the community for the syno knowledge, threads and helpful responses posted here. I've been using Trantor's 4.3 on my HP ProLiant N54L for some time now and having watched the various threads on here have slowly built up the confidence to do a hard drive upgrade/esxi install and DSM 5 update 2 install. Using the help guide here, Gnoboot's DSM 5 and XPEH's comments here I was able to install ESXi on a new USB drive and migrate all 7tb of existng data to the new Syno install. Thanks to antelo's comments here I've then updated to 5.0 update 2. Posting this here so anyone wanting to do undertake anything similar can see it can be done without data loss.
  7. Hiya, Sorry for hi-jacking this thread but seems appropriate given my hardware setup. I'm currently running 4.3 update 4 on my N54L via a USB drive. Is there a means of moving to ESX with DSM as an OS keeping all my existing data intact? I'd add an extra drive for any additional OS (Windows with Google Music!). I managed to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3 simply by shutting down, swapping the USB drive and restoring the Syno settings. Is it possible to do something similiar?

  9. Morning, It depends on what you want out of it I guess. I've an N54L native and it works like a dream. The only thing that does my nut in is the lack of Google Music Manager. This one application is the sole reason I still have a laptop, everything else I can do on a tablet. I've not used an ESXI image but I'm guessing since ESXI is installed on a hard drive(??) then the image would go on a hard drive too, not a USB drive. Native installs bits and pieces on every drive, not one specifically. So if you're going native you can whip the 250gb out. If you're going ESXI you could use that for the OS's?
  10. The offline one worked for me, thanks. For the complete n00bs and useless like me it's worth noting I had to use WINSCP to transfer the files and i had to create the folder called public.
  11. Hi Trantor, First off, massive thanks for the whole build really. Using a HP N54L and DSM has made one hell of a difference to the way I work at home, so much so I'm slowly by surely fazing out all MS crap in my house. Anyway, rather than ask you to compile drivers for me for a part I haven't bought yet, I wondered if there was already a PCI SATA expansion card set of drivers available? I have an ICY dock in which I'd like to add an additional 6 2.5" drives, that can only be achieved by adding an expansion card. Also, again so as to not trouble you, I Google'd adding drivers to a Synology and found the below. Is it really that easy? Because if so I'm happy to do this myself, and I'm sure armed with this info most others are. For the people intersted in how i got it compiled. first we need to get the package manager ipkg to work: INSTALLING IPKG -open dsm package center and add the package source http://packages.quadrat4.de -refresh -install bootstrap installer to get ipkg. -reboot,wait until the beep check that the nas is still fine -enable ssh client in the dsm by clicking on terminal and check ssh. -use http://www.putty.org/ to ssh on port 22 into your nas. -login as 'root' with your admin password defined in dsm. GET BUILD ENVIRONMENT now you are ready to get the build environment ready: -execute 'ipkg update'(update should be succefull) -'ipkg install make' to get the buildtool make -'ipkg install gcc' to get the c compiler gcc DOWNLOAD AND COMPILE SOURCES -download your source files for your hardware. -put it somewhere on your nas. -via putty 'cd /volume1/' -now make sure your ssh location is in the folder where Makefile is located -execute 'make' Your driver is now compiled for the Synology.
  12. I like many have been following this thread for some time eager to put 4.3 on my N54L. I have to ask, as someone using 4.2 from https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing , I don't really mind missing out on any additional features, but is my device a security risk on the internet? I assume 4.3 would have closed a few security holes and not just adding new features. Whilst my box is made up mostly of movies and music I'm still paranoid I pose a risk. I wish I could find the tread to thank the developer of the DSM I'm running, it's amazing and I'm very grateful. Obviously in a perfect world upgrading would be grand but understand why no one wants to share
  13. Thanks both, I'll post a link to the hardware I plan on buying. Do you know if there's any 4 SATA port cards supported with Syno? Save the hassle of requesting, Thanks
  14. Afternoon all, I have me DSM 4.2 (DS3612xs_4.2-3211_x64_Microserver-20130612) thanks to the lovely people here and it's working fine on my HP ProLiant N54L. I bought my an ICY dock for the 5" bay and whilst it's picked up in the BIOS, the Synology doesn't spot it. I'm using a 2 sata port PCI card as an expansion. If i plug in a laptop hard drive to the PCI card it boots into windows no problem so the PCI is working and the ICY dock is obviously doing it's thing. Here's another twist in the tale. If I use the 5th sata port from the motherboard itself the Synology picks it up. My guess is somewhere the Syno doesn't want to recognise the PCI card. Any suggestions anyone? A setting in the BIOS or something else?
  15. Thanks mike_6480 and jdpdata, The built in DDNS isn't working for me so will try the plex server. Thanks again
  16. Morning gents Massive thanks to the community for getting Syno on a ProLiant. I bought a DS212j for testing purposes, fell in love with the OS so got the N54L on the promise of slapping DSM on. Currently running 4.1 but about to put on 4.2 from https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing Anyway, my question is not about how to put it on or unlock hardware features but instead the cloud based programs within. I'd like to run DS Audio on my android phone but it looks like I need to register the Syno device in order to get a login ID. Is there away around this or is this the limitation of putting DSM on a Proliant? If it's not possible, anyone recommend any alternative? I use Google Play at the moment but it lacks a "view by folder" category and I'm more of an explorer user rather than a library. Finding tracks via artists/albums is more of a struggle than by folder. Thanks peeps.
