  1. Confident this isn't the answer you seek but have you tried ESXi? I originally wanted HyperV on my N54L but it just outright refused to boot from USB. In the end I had to go with ESXi which is working like a dream. Granted there's no native S.M.A.R.T data available but someone on here has built a Raspberry Pi tool to get the info; haven't tried it myself yet so don't know how good it is
  2. In the control panel > update > click update settings and chose Important update only
  3. Hiya, Sorry to be a pain but is there any chance someone could provide a fairly step by step guide for ESXi? I'd normally try and figure it out by myself however I'm away from home with a flaky VPN connection to rely on so I can't afford to screw this up taking chances. I'm also away for a long, long time so don't want to put it off. I'm using nanoboot 5.0.3.1 I think it is, whatever the most recent is minus one. I'm on 4493 update 7 and I'm NOT using a custom SN. Massive thanks to anyone for just reading this.
  4. I do indeed. So i guess the same steps as ESXi install. Pull drives out, Install Hyper-V onto USB key, get it up and running. New VM with Xpenology on, drives back in, pass through then hold onto something tight and hope data doesn't get wiped?
  5. Got to be honest with you. Scares me like hell. Running a HP N54L and ran out of disk space. Added a RAID card but VMWare doesn't recognise it. Looked online on how to inject drivers into ESXi, the best I could find was http://www.v-front.de/2013/01/release-esxcli-plugin-to-run-arbitrary.html however even with PowerCLI installed I get lspci cannot be found. Not very useful and really pulling my hair out. The hardware works out of the box on all Windows builds after Vista and having read how to install drivers on Hyper V it looks bloody easy. So my question is. Has anyone moved from VMWare to Hyper-V and managed to retain all your Syno data? I have no problem re-installing packages, setting up the device as new, I just don't want to lose 16tb of data, even though it is backed up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  6. hackers do not necessary need to try your admin password, once the hackers identified your device is synology NAS, and have some security vulnerabilities that haven't been fixed, it is possible hackers can remote access your nas as root user - disable port forwards 5000, 50001 ... ports - stop using synology free DDNS, synology domain is unsafe On further reading today (fuck work, who needs work?) it looks like I'm safe as running the latest Nanoboot. Still, taken it off the internet for the time being. Isn't Nanoboot using a legacy bootloader or something to get around the Syno protection? So is it possible even on DSM 5 the rest of us could be a target?
  7. Further info here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/05 ... y_attacks/ Although according to the comments it's been patched? I'll ask the same questions on here as I have on theregister: I disabled the admin account and created a new one. I have SSH turned off. I have SSL turned on and auto-redirected. I have auto-block IP on 2 password fuck-ups. Am I doing everything I should to keep safe?
  8. What disks do you have? I'm on ESXi 5.5 and spin down doesn't work for me, nor does SMART data. However I read on WD's site the firmware on WD RED's does spin down itself, doesn't need an OS to perform said task. So if you're using WD RED it's not important, it's already in hand.
  9. Fixed it. Not sure what it was, either VPN connecting and blocking me out (even on the local network?), a hack attack (forgot to disable SSH although not sure why this would be the problem as have a bad password policy) or just the network being pants. Either way resolved it by deleting the network card from VM. Booting. Turning off. Creating new network card. Assigning previous IP address.
  10. Morning all, OK Maybe fallen over is a bit dramatic but I can't get onto my Syno box. Not via the web console or SMB. It's a VM and through ESX I can log onto the console but through the GUI it's just timing out. Any ideas? Any log file i can pull from the console to help me diagnose the problem? Really in the dark here so any help would be appreciated. I'm running Nanoboot 5.0.2.1 with DSM 5 update 3. Thanks
  11. Version: 5.0-4493 Update 3 (2014/07/24) Improvements 1.Improved the stability of volume expansion. Fixed Issues 1.Fixed two SAMBA vulnerabilities which allowed remote attackers to use the weaknesses to perform DoS attacks (CVE-2014-0244, CVE-2014-3493). 2.Fixed an issue which prevented users from being able to log into DSM after completing QuickConnect Wizard after a fresh DSM installation. 3.Fixed an issue causing slow response time in DSM on the early version of RS10613xs+ when too many concurrent connections were active. Doesn't update through the GUI on Nanoboot. Fail's almost instantly.
  12. http://cyanlabs.net/tutorials/synology- ... o-nanoboot Can't find a virtual image file for the latest version but this will get you onto nanoboot nonetheless *Edit* Here's a whole heap of downloads for img / vmdk's etc http://www.xpenology.nl/boot-images/
  13. Hiya, I'm very interested in this as now the weather is getting better in the UK i've become very aware of the noise from the fans on my N54L. I don't really know enough about coding though so the links you posted all look alien to me. Is this something relatively easy to do? I do have a spare PI so can easily build something to pump out SMART data. I can get SMART data via putty using ~ # esxcli storage core device smart get -d=t10.ATA_____WDC_WD40EFRX2D68WT0N0_________________________WD2DWCC4E0685966 although for me it gives it fahrenheit and not celcius which is a pain. Either way it's not hard to Google the translation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  14. Using the cyanlabs guide to upgrade from gnoboot to nanoboot, that's the kind of procedure you'll need when Trantor/anyone else releases a proper hacked version. The PAT file will almost certainly change yes but they'll be no loss of data,
  15. Happened again today three times whilst trying to watch 24 so switched on the debug log of xbmc (see below). I've posted the same thing on XBMC here (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=196211) Thanks 14:31:24 T:2780 DEBUG: Previous line repeats 268 times. 14:31:24 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity2 - was:2167033713.512924, should be:2167044231.475101, error:10517.962176 14:31:26 T:604 DEBUG: PERIPHERALS::CPeripherals::GetMappingForDevice - device (2548:1002) mapped to Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter (type = cec) 14:36:03 T:2780 DEBUG: Previous line repeats 55 times. 14:36:03 T:2780 WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(audio)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available 14:36:03 T:2916 WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(video)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available 14:36:04 T:2916 INFO: CDVDPlayerVideo - Stillframe detected, switching to forced 23.976024 fps 14:36:04 T:2916 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: pattern lost on diff 208541.666667 14:36:07 T:604 DEBUG: PERIPHERALS::CPeripherals::GetMappingForDevice - device (2548:1002) mapped to Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter (type = cec) 14:36:09 T:2916 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: detected pattern of length 1: 41708.33, frameduration: 41708.333333 14:36:12 T:604 DEBUG: PERIPHERALS::CPeripherals::GetMappingForDevice - device (2548:1002) mapped to Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter (type = cec) 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: Previous line repeats 6 times. 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::SetCaching - caching state 1 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::HandleMessages - player started 1 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::HandleMessages - player started 2 14:36:46 T:3452 DEBUG: ------ Window Init (DialogSeekBar.xml) ------ 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::SetCaching - caching state 4 14:36:46 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity1 - was:2489494496.149154, should be:2446597710.199391, error:-42896785.949762 14:36:46 T:2916 INFO: CDVDPlayerVideo - Stillframe left, switching to normal playback 14:36:46 T:2916 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: pattern lost on diff -42959291.666830 14:36:46 T:1220 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::SetCaching - caching state 0 14:36:47 T:604 DEBUG: PERIPHERALS::CPeripherals::GetMappingForDevice - device (2548:1002) mapped to Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter (type = cec) 14:36:47 T:3452 DEBUG: ------ Window Deinit (DialogSeekBar.xml) ------ 14:36:50 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity2 - was:2450612933.501521, should be:2450590263.907123, error:-22669.594398 14:36:51 T:2916 DEBUG: CPullupCorrection: detected pattern of length 1: 41708.33, frameduration: 41708.333333 14:36:52 T:604 DEBUG: PERIPHERALS::CPeripherals::GetMappingForDevice - device (2548:1002) mapped to Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter (type = cec) 14:40:05 T:2780 DEBUG: Previous line repeats 38 times. 14:40:05 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio - CDVDMsg::GENERAL_EOF 14:40:05 T:2780 WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(audio)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: CDVDPlayer::OnExit() 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: DVDPlayer: eof, waiting for queues to empty 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: DVDPlayer: closing audio stream 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: Closing audio stream 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: CDVDMessageQueue(audio)::WaitUntilEmpty 14:40:05 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio - CDVDMsg::GENERAL_SYNCHRONIZE 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: Waiting for audio thread to exit 14:40:05 T:2780 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio::Process - Abort received, exiting thread 14:40:05 T:2780 NOTICE: thread end: CDVDPlayerAudio::OnExit() 14:40:05 T:2780 DEBUG: Thread DVDPlayerAudio 2780 terminating 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: Closing audio device 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: Deleting audio codec 14:40:05 T:3440 DEBUG: CActiveAE::DiscardStream - audio stream deleted 14:40:05 T:3440 DEBUG: CActiveAE::ClearDiscardedBuffers - buffer pool deleted 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: DVDPlayer: closing video stream 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: Closing video stream 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: CDVDMessageQueue(video)::WaitUntilEmpty 14:40:05 T:2916 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerVideo - CDVDMsg::GENERAL_SYNCHRONIZE 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: waiting for video thread to exit 14:40:05 T:2916 WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(video)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available 14:40:05 T:2916 ERROR: Got MSGQ_ABORT or MSGO_IS_ERROR return true 14:40:05 T:2916 NOTICE: thread end: video_thread 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: deleting video codec 14:40:05 T:2916 DEBUG: Thread DVDPlayerVideo 2916 terminating 14:40:05 T:1220 NOTICE: CDVDPlayer::OnExit() deleting demuxer
  16. They're all stable. If you've read anything on the forums though you'll see nanoboot's is using a legacy by-pass to get around volumes crashing. It works fine but it's not the best solution. If you're not in a rush I dare say Trantor will release his own DSM 5 in a month or two with an up to date fix. However this project moves along at break neck speed and it's very easy to upgrade so you may as well as well get on the wagon now. Here's a bunch of tutorial's from one of the forum members. The guides may not be written for the latest version of nanoboot et el but the process is still the same. http://cyanlabs.co.uk/tutorials
  17. Excellent guide, an additional resource to the other guides presented by other board members. The IMG to VMDK thing is fantastic, wondered how to do that myself. Thanks
  18. Sods law it's been ok today with XBMC debugging switched on. Are are you suggesting logs from else where? Thanks for advice so far
  19. Folks, friends, I've been using Xpenology on ESXi since gnoboot's release, now i'm on nanoboot. I'm using an N54L with ESXi installed on a USB dongle. My datastore is an SSD then several WD drives for storage. I have a Intel NUC with an m-sata SSD and 4gb of RAM and win 8.1. I use XBMC 13 (now on 13.1 beta 2). Ever since moving to ESXi I've found movies occasionally stutter. Not entirely sure why, since coming across the problem xpenology has been upgraded to nanoboot, xbmc has been upgraded to 13.1 and the datastore has been upgraded from a crappy 5400rpm drive to an SSD. Any ideas why it's stuttering? I've just added a second NIC to my Xpenology machine incase the one is pants. Like I say I'm pretty sure it's ESXi at fault but everything I've read says ESXi has so little impact on the performance of the machine that it could be considered to not even exist as such. Thoughts and advice from fellow ESXi users would be greatly appreciated.
  20. Getting the same rar error. Also notice Trantor has updated to 5.0.2.4 Is there any easy way to change an img file to VMDK? Happy to help convert and host files myself
  21. If you can share I will honour you until the end of time. Hope you compiled for amd64 cpu... I have compiled for Bromolow (I use HP N40L with AMD CPU) and that is working fine. http://download.mavaee.nl/Synology/Bromolow_SPKs/ My hero. *swoon
  22. Gents, gnoboot had a problem where the drive temperatures didn't display properly when running through ESX-i (I wasn't the only one to spot this). Is this an issue on Nanoboot too? Thanks in advance
  23. ok well that explains slower than USB 3 speeds but 350gb in 12 hours is well below USB 2 surely? They're not pissy small files either, they're HD mkv's so anywhere between 3gb and 20gb
