  1. Apparently this is free and should help kill off some of the bots? https://www.google.com/recaptcha/intro/index.html
  2. If you're in the market for a new router may I suggest you go with ASUS. I have an RT-N56U and that has a built in DDNS service. You could probably pick one of these models up super cheap from ebay or alternatively go with a new model supporting wireless AC. Either way the DDNS service has been really useful; but not nearly as useful (and secure) as the VPN it offers.
  3. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6247#p37674 That's on page 2 of this forum...
  4. I'm sure you can use download station for this? I don't have an iPhone so not sure if the software is available on the iTunes store but on Android we have Download Station allowing us to do as your requirements.
  5. Well i still can't get esata working (maybe i have a duff cable?) but my BIOS settings were wrong so managed to get the SSD working through the onboard SATA. Thanks for your time
  6. Hello ha, Is anyone using esata on 5.2? Was planning on holding off the upgrade for a week or so to see if there's any teething issues but could really do with getting an SSD on my machine as a volume sooner rather than later. Ta
  7. Try this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5932 From what I gather you can't run an upgrade to 5055 as you would all the standard updates. You need to use the new boot image. Downgrade then if you really want to upgrade use a new boot image.
  8. Morning gents, Is there a hack to make the esata work I'm not aware of? I have two N54L's. One with the BIOS hack and one without yet neither seem to grant me access to the esata device, either as an internal or external storage device. Tried several drives but nothing. Is there something under the bonnet I need to change? Running nanoboot 5.x something. Not the latest but one behind. Thanks in advance.
  9. I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't noticed just how much spam the site gets. Can we possibly make a rule so new users can't start threads? Or maybe have a captcha thing for users with less then 10 posts? Much love
  10. Ah ok, thanks for the update. Sucks to be SSD!
  11. Good to see you back on the boards trantor. Last I read you were building a house or something? I'm sure I speak for everyone on here to say it's nice to see your name pop up again.
  12. Is SSD cache a right off in Xpenology? First time I've tried to use it but long time user of the site and have seen things pop up about it before. Using a Corsair 120GB drive. Have assigned full thing to it but the whole box crashes. Although diskstation login... is still shown on a monitor plugged in the whole thing has dropped off my network. No IP address on my router. When i reboot SSD cache hasn't been setup. Any suggestions?
  13. Thanks for your feedback Segator. I tried UNRAID yesterday but never got as far as running it. I could see http://tower on my router taking up an IP address but couldn't connect no matter what I did. Have a second Syno box up and running. I can't complain. It does everything I need it to do (except Google Play music, that's still a must have), just would have been nice to give it a whirl
  14. Should this work? The 5th SATA port works as a stand alone drive but if I try to use RAID 1 or 5 my Syno bombs out. If i try to move my existing discs onto it Xpenology doesn't even run. I get the Xpenology screen (from a monitor) at the top and not a lot else. Any help would be appreciated. I've got the BIOS hack running although since running it again to make sure it works my additional RAID PCi card and USB3 controller have stopped working. Any ideas?
  15. That is the question. Been using Xpenology for.. I don't know how long, 18 months maybe? Trantor's 4.3 was my first encounter and fell in love with it from the off. Tried my hand at ESXi but really didn't like it. Although there's a fair amount of people far more skilled than I am who say there's no difference in performance my write speeds weren't as fast and backing up to USB was horrifically slow. Anyway, got some new drives coming tomorrow and I'm toying with moving to UNRAID. My thoughts are that whilst I love Xpenology the reliance on hackers to rip out protection so it works on different hardware makes me nervous. I have complete faith there's no back doors but worry if some of the protection being stripped out leaves a hole or two. I use it remotely. One of the things that's perked my interest with UNRAID is the ability to throw whatever drives I want in there and it does it's thing. I have 2 SSD drives i'll be using through a 5.25" bay converter so in terms of keeping the speed I'm used to whilst UNRAID works out the parity, I shouldn't notice any difference. Has anyone used both? What are your thoughts? Any have more flexibility? Which of the two is generally faster?
  16. have you tried re-downloading the image and pat file again? I've had that happen to me before, the PAT file was mashed up, re-downloaded. worked fine.
  17. http://cyanlabs.net/Thread-Install-Syno ... i-Non-ESXI This is the guide i used. Worked fine for me going from N54L native to ESXi. If you have additional hardware, such as a RAID card, I'd suggest going with ESXi 5.1 rather than 5.5 as it supports more hardware out of the box.
  18. This is why I dropped ESXi. The performance is terrible and anyone who says otherwise is deluded. Backing up large mkv files to a 4tb USB drive took over a day under ESXi. Under bare metal I could back up roughly 6tb in waking hours, what's more I can do it over USB 3 which cannot be done under a virtual environment (or at least not on 5.1 which whilst not the most up to date version of ESXi is the best for adding additional hardware without really fiddling with files). Copying files from one drive to another within DSM was just as poor, if I did anything else within Syno whilst copying in many cases the copy would simply fail. Unless you absolutely need to have an additional machine running from the hardware I'd drop the Virtual environment all together. If you need a second machine for anything special why not run a PI powered directly from the back? That's what I plan on doing, I wanted the virtual machine to run Google Play Music Manager which isn't available on DSM. Once I can be bothered I'm gonna run a low key linux/win10 Pi2 straight off the back of the N54. Problem solved.
  19. I use ESXi 5.1 with DSM 5 and Windows 7. It works fine but have every intention of going back to bare bones so I can extract S.M.A.R.T data easily (you can do it with ESXi but it's just far easier bare bones). USB support in ESXi is ruddy slow. On bare bones it's sooooo much faster. Unless you absolutely need the option of building other systems on your N54L then I wouldn't bother. Otherwise it does work and it works well. You just sacrifice a little for it.
  20. That opinion right there is stupid. You wouldn't contact Syno for support but that doesn't stop the services working. By that trail of thought you may as well not have download station installed as that itself is service.
  21. http://ukdl.synology.com/download/Docum ... _Guide.pdf BOOOOM! Trying it now using a synoboot plugin as a template. Sadly I'm in a hotel right now with restricted access to torrent sites so cannot check URL's or anything. Will update when I've moved on (3 days time).
  22. Weird that. I updated mine without spotting this; just checked and my OneDrive seems to be working ok? I'm on ESXi 5.1 with the same nanoboot as you.
  23. Does this work for 5.1 ESXi? Using 5.1 as there's more driver support than 5.5 I'm away from home at the moment so can't try anyway; but just wondered as by the time I'm back my NAS will have been on 6 months and nervous it's ready to pop so was prepared to go back to bare bones.
  24. Really? Wow! Excellent. Thanks for the help. The DLM thing would still be useful but this is a great work around. Ta
  25. Have Google'd it but the results go back to DSM 3.2 and they're not great at that. In the UK a lot of torrent sites are being blocked, TPB has fallen and quite often I can search for something and get no results. Have used synoboost but it's not as up to date as I'd like. Will happily share any DLM files I build when I know how to do them, Thanks
