Synology NAS or Build your own

I just got a RS812RP+ ( 4 drive) rackmount for $300 no drives but i already had drives. I think that's a good deal so at least i have one stable system that i can upgrade without having to migrate data etc. everytime a new version came out. That was my logic, it has 4 GB ram i believe. I just wanted to use it for some movies, and pictures backup. Don't really do much encoding etc. maybe I should look into that but have no time. Its mostly for home backup, storage, and instead of having my 4 year old swapping dvd's out and getting them stuck just having it on the nas so i can use my IP TV to play off it. i do have other hardware i might just use for the NAS as well without VMWARE. I think VMWARe is slowing down my connection and wasn't happy with performance even on my WD 3TB Red drives SATA 3 / 7200RPM.

Synology NAS or Build your own

I saw on craigslist someone selling a Synology 4 port for $$350 -400 and I was wondering if I should get that or build my own server and just boot Synology off the stick or SSD and save some $$$. What do people suggest? If i buy a real synology i am limited to 4 drives, yet if i build my own i could have multiple SATA 3 drive support. Any suggestions or recommendations?
  5. has anyone tried to upgrade from 4.2 3111 esxi vmdk to 5.0 beta?

VMDK / Storage issue / File system read only

    I also tried Run fsck on ext4 file system: fsck.ext4 -v /dev/vg1/volume_1 and e2fsck -p -y -f -v /dev/vg1/volume_1 rebooted yet no luck.
  8. I have DSM 4.2 and i also created a new VM of DSM 4.3 and i took the VMDK drives from DSM 4.2 and added it to my dsm 4.3 and turned it on but for some reason it doesn't work (network doesn't get detected etc.) so I turned off DSM 4.3 and just turned on my DSM 4.2 on my ESXI (same configs as before because i didn't even touch it ) and now when DSM 4.2 comes up it doesn't even load up the HTTPS site to login into. My shares don't work yet i can ping it and from vmware vcenter console i can login to it locally . I get Failed to read filesystem magic on /dev/vg1/lv:/volume1 MOUNT READ-ONLY ON /DEV/VG1/LV

Migrating (VMDK) Storage from 4.2 to 4.3

Thanks Djey i will give it a try.
  10. How do you migrate the VMDK's from 4.2 to 4.3? I moved them to 4.3 directory and attached the VMDK's (SCSI 0,1 ) but when i login into 4.3 it sees those drives as unassigned and asks me to initialize meaning Formatting it. I don't want to loose the data. Does anyone have any step by step.
  11. I attached the VMDK's from 4.2 to 4.3 but it doesn't see them it asks me to initialize the drives meaning ERASE them. What am i doing wrong?

How update DSM 4.3-3810 UPDATE 3

This works perfectly thanks. 1. First check if you're able to download update 3 from the GUI (Control Panel, DSM Update) - Download the update. - 1a. If not able to download, connect/login with putty/telnet (user: root) - 1b. Remove /autoupd@te.info (rm /autoupd@te.info) - 1c. Now try to donwload update 3 from GUI again (Control Panel, DSM Update) 2. Connect/login with putty/telnet and execute these 2 commands: Code: Select all sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /autoupd@te.info > /autoupd@te.info1 mv /autoupd@te.info1 /autoupd@te.info 3. Install the update from GUI (Control Panel, DSM Update)
