THX, will try this as my next project on a N40L.

Hi, great project here ! Because NxxL NAS Systems from HP are very popular it would be nice to be able to run xpenology on it. But the NxxL series use an AMD64 processor, so I think the kernel building decribed here will not work. I'm a LINUX newbee and in the future I think I'm not able to do the kernel building by myself. Is there any plan to demonstrate a AMD64 kernel building to ? Maybe I can try to run xpenology in VirtualBox, but I think that slow down things.

Hallo, möchte gerne auch dahin wo Du schon bist . Habe aber kaum Linux-Kenntnisse. Habe dazu gerade auch einen Post im englischen Teil geschrieben ! Kannst Du mir etwas auf die Sprünge helfen, damit ich schon mal so weit wie Du komme. Werde vorerst kein RAID fahren und wenn doch dann die w.u. angegebene Lösung wählen. Zu Deinem Problem : Nehme an Du fährst die 3TB Platten mit dem SW Raid. Das soll subotimal sein, bzw nur unter WIndows funktionieren. Hello, very interesting forum and thread here ! ! For a N40L in the beginning I planed to use Openvmediavault. But when I found this exiting forum I 've changed my mind and now will also go with xenology ! Bad news is : I'm a Linux newbee ! Do you think I can manage it to install xenology on my N40L and get ist up and running ? Allthough I'm a linux newbee, I think I can learn very quick and handle with a little help all the advise I will receive. What I've done till now: 1. I followed the HP instruction an installed the latest BIOS Ver. O41072911A - not the mod bios yet, will this work this way ? Or ist it a"must" to install the modded version ? 2. I installed a HD in bay 1, It's a used one from a Mac, not erased, still all OS and data files on it. I thought xpenology will format it ! ? 3. I installed the ++ img on a 4GB USB stick, plugged it in the internal USB port. 4. Powered on the N40L, I think kind a linux is booting, but can't interpret all messages on the screen, because of my little knowledge in linux and bcs the messages are running fast over the screen. Than the system hang, only can switch the machine off. At this point I need some supprt. What went wrong , what must I do ? Maybe someone can give a step by step instruction for the whole procedures. Auch ein Hallo in die Runde ! Super Forum hier, genau das was ich gesucht habe ! Will die SW auch auf einem N40L installieren - bin aber leider absoluter Linux Newbie, habe noch Fragen über Fragen. @MYXOMOP Du hast es ja schon erfolgreich geschafft , also sollte es mit einigen Tips und Hilfestellungen bei mir auch klappen. Wie wäre es mit einem Unterforum für den N36L / N40L /N54L ? Wer kann so etwas eintüten ? Muss man dazu den Mod anbeamen ?

@harlam Very interesting posting ! I will buy a N40L next week - for 190,- € unbeatable ! After read al lot about opensource NAS SW I too decided for the Openmediavault NAS . But I also interested in this project here and your experience. For my better understanding : You first installed Openmedaivault on your N36L. Next you installed as a plugin under Openmediavault Virtualbox. In this VM you set up the DSM 4.1 . Ist this corect ? So you can switch between the two NAS Systems by starting DSM 4.1 in the VM How ist the performane of the DSM 4.1 under this conditions? Can you stream Videos, use iTunes Server a.s.o. How fast are the datarates to and from the NAS in DSM 4.1 mode ? I'll start with 4GB RAM on the N40L, do you think that ist sufficiant ? Where do you come from ? I'm from Germany ? Hope I can participate a littel bit from your project and experience .
