  1. damn, I want to know, too. So I just realized I am on 1.04b Jun's loader but running the .pat for DS918. Is there any possibility of downgrading my or re-installing 1.04b with another .pat file to match what my serial/mac should be? Any suggestions?
  2. I will try the boot device method since I think that is easier than the script. Thank you for the reminder of where we can set the MAC. I originally forgot where in the process we do this.
  3. I have an bare metal xpenology build at home running 6.2.3-25426 Update 2 and Surveillance Station 8.2.8-6335. I also have a DS-411slim at work where no one plans on ever using the surveillance station because they already have a standalone DVR box. Does anyone know how the activation system works for a license pack? Does it auto-detect the mac/serial from the unit, or can I manually key it in? I am thinking of using my work device to activate my bare metal xpenology build - is this possible? Thanks in advance! -Chuck
  4. @IG-88, thank you so much for the VERY thorough response. I guess if that's the case, I might see if I can get my hands on my original Synology server to do a proper surveillance station. The server is probably best suited for something else at this time.
  5. Greetings, everyone! From http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10921 - it looks like people were able to get a Dell PowerEdge to work with Jun's loader for DSM 6.0.1 using a PERC 6i RAID card. By chance, does anyone know if a similar PowerEdge, a T110, might work with a PERC S300 card and onboard NIC (broadcom chipset)? Second question is I'd like to remove my current DVR and use this system instead since the Surveillance Station is soooo much better, but how would licensing for the cameras work? How many come free and is it possible to buy licenses for an Xpenology build?
  6. Running bare metal on the Q1900 board. Install went without a hitch but the system never came back online. As a previous post, had to hard reboot the system and everything came back online without a hitch. I have multiple system services running. None seemed negatively affected so far.
  7. I just migrated my DSM 5.2 install to DSM 6 Patch 8 using Jun's loader but found that my LAN port only runs at 100Mb now instead of 1Gb. Has anyone encountered this? Feels like a driver issue. But if it is, how do I go about correcting it? Many thanks in advance!
  8. Why is it encrypted folders cannot be assigned permissions? I created an encrypted folder to backup my stuff, but each time I try to set permissions, I get an error that "this type of folder does not support ACL." Doesn't make a lot of sense if you ask me. Means it's encrypted but when mounted, everyone with access to the DS can see it.
  9. At work, we have a legit Synology device but at home, I am more than content with a slightly older DSM release on my high powered custom Xpenology build. Gotta keep in mind that you do sacrifice some to be on the bleeding edge. In some cases, you might actually bleed out of your eyeballs when you realize how much personal data has been lost due to a bug in a release. Keep off-site backups where possible and slow down before updating. You'll be better off for it. Then also, be kind to the Xpenology developers! And actually, I noticed that DSM 6.0 does some funny filesystem things that makes my excel workbooks behave a little funky when it comes to updating and inputting data. Knowing that, I'd be slightly hesitant to switch to DSM 6 so quickly on my custom build at home. But yeah, it is kind of cool. I do off-site backups of my Xpenology box to my Synology box and vice versa from work. Best of both worlds!
  10. That is such a good insight. With such a small community working on these Xpenology boxes under varying conditions, it is very difficult to determine what is best practice. It might actually be the case that for most scenarios, relying on the GUI is more accurate than trying to rely on the CLI to understand what is going on "under the hood." I'm going to go look for something I can measure the actual power usage with so I can get a better understanding!
  11. When you run the command to show current CPU frequency after running the script, does it show a lower frequency, or same frequency?
  12. I just built my first Xpenology box recently and spent a good month laboring over the small details about RAID cards and such. There are only two concerns that you should be aware of: 1) the Synology DSM is a software RAID solution. You could get a really nice RAID card, but will not be using the onboard RAID controller to setup your arrays and such. You'll setup your array as JBOD and then setup the array in the Volume Manager. So you could potentially save yourself some cash and just get a standard SATA adapter, unless there are certain functions you could use in a full hardware RAID card. 2) the default CPU governor sets the CPU at max speed at all times, even though the system monitor shows CPU usage at 0%. Once you are up and running, checkout the "Xpenology CPU Throttle Script tutorial" (see google for link). As a reference: I got the Antec ISK300-65 case and jammed 4 laptop drives (4x500GB in RAID5) into the case as well as a 16GB SSD DoM for iSCSI caching purposes. The thing is tiny (had to drill my own mounting holes into the existing chassis to fit the drives), is practically inaudible, even at the dead of night, and runs low power, at only 65 watts or less. Btw, using a Celeron J CPU, it does support Docker, but I'm sure you'll need more "oomph" than what the ASRock mobo can provide. The entire build cost me exactly $400, even.
  13. By default, DSM will not let you install packages to USB. They can only be installed to default system volumes1,2,3, etc. If you force the settings via Terminal, they will be cleared on reboot.
  14. There are two separate locations in the Control Panel for enabling HTTPS. Are you using Control Panel -> Network -> DSM Settings or are you using Control Panel -> Web Services? If you enable redirect in the DSM Settings page, you should get a re-direct. If you enable it in Web Services, it will not affect the DSM login page.
  15. Yes, follow that guide but stop where it asks you to use the Snyology assist website. Just log back into the DS after it's booted up and go through the control panel and perform a manual update selecting the .pat file. And yes, ignore the hardware version - it's been made general purpose for various bare metal or visualized installs.
  16. I just want to chime in ... thank GOD it's not on by default. My toddler son keeps pressing buttons on anything in the house and could easily turn off my server if it did work, LOL. I can safely watch TV and see him pressing away at the power button on my NAS and not worry about it cutting out.
  17. The DSM OS is also cloned onto each drive as it is added. That's just another added layer of redundancy in case of system failure. Just one less thing to worry about when replacing a HDD.
  18. 1) Make sure you have the latest XPEnoboot on your USB boot loader 2) Download the latest Patch Level for your Xpenology box from xpenology.me/downloads 2) On the XPEnoboot boot selection screen, select the last option for "migrate/upgrade" 3) Go to control panel > update > manual DSM update > select file from step 1 3a) Some smaller patch level updates will update fine from a direct Synology download. If it fails, use the one from the downloads section of xpenology.me That should be it. Many users try to do a direct upgrade without rebooting onto migrate/upgrade mode, which prevents the update from properly being applied. Once you have updated, the DS should automatically restart and you'll be good to go. On older patch levels, some system services needed to be re-activated/re-started such as media server, photo station, etc. I did not experience this with the most recent 2 patch levels.
  19. omg, THANK YOU too! I almost gave up on this when I could no longer find the shell scripts. After applying the procedure, my Celeron J based ASROCK board is now at 1.3GHz as opposed to 1.9GHz. That's not quite the savings I was hoping for but is that where it should be? Or
  20. Actually, my wifi AP and router are separate. But I don't think it matters too much .... Synology RADIUS <---> Netgear WG102 <---> WiFi clients. Step 1: In Synology RADIUS, I have set the IP of the WAP and passcode. Step 2: In the WAP, it asks only for the RADIUS server IP and passcode from step 1, which I have input Step 3: In my Android/iphone device, it asks for the following information, which I do not have: In my Android device, it asks for a bunch of things: 1) security certificate (imported from DS) 2) authentication type: EAP/TLS/SSL/STLS/PWD (I have no idea which to use) 2) identity (what is this?) At home, I have a similar setup, but do use DD-WRT. Is this any easier to setup? Synology RADIUS <---> DD-WRT Router <---> WiFi Clients
  21. I'm getting nowhere on the Synology forums and was hoping to have some luck here ... Does anyone know how to setup the official RADIUS package for use with wireless WPA2-Enterprise? My base understanding is that you'll need to authenticate your mobile clients with the local user list from the DS. However, there's about half a dozen options on my wireless clients (android and iOS) that do not clearly lead them to what I need to input. I've only been able to get as far as specifying my WAP IP in the Synology Radius package and then connecting my WAP to the RADIUS with the passcode. However, there is nothing else to configure from then on out. In my mobile devices, I'm a bit lost. Many thanks in advance!
  22. I'm running a Synology to Synology backup over WAN but find that backups fail, are unable top copy files within the source folder! All the subfolders copy just fine, but the 6 excel spreadsheets I have in the root of the source folder keep failing to copy. I've had to stick those into their own subfolder to get Synology to Synology backup to work. Has anyone seen this before? Any tips on how to get it working properly? Permissions are all set to admin for all files but still no go. Thanks in advance!
  23. For a standard run of OpenVPN where I only need to access small word/excel files, is there any performance difference running OpenVPN directly through my router, which has 128MB RAM and a 650MHz CPU (running DD-WRT) compared to my quad core Xpenology box with 8GB of RAM? I was told that throughput is determined by the CPU/RAM combo, but wonder what is the actual performance impact? Your thoughts?
  24. I was looking at this until I saw DD-WRT. Totally enhanced my small office and home office networking experience. I tried going through the Windows Server route, but it was a little too hardcore for me. Lastly, there is also pfsense, which already has custom hardware out there. There's a whole slew of existing router mods to try out - both hardware and software via Tomato, OpenWRT, or DD-WRT. In terms of hardware, 10 AWESOME AWESOME MODS: http://www.networkworld.com/article/2988590/computers/10-gloriously-excessive-pc-cooling-setups.html?phint=newt%3Dnetworkworld_week_in_review_alert&phint=idg_eid%3Da6683098335f4bab91c85b6acdf09df3#tk.NWWNLE_nlt_review_2015-10-02 I think you'll all find that VERY AMUSING!
  25. I figured out the issue. The UPS unit is so tight in the closet space that I had to plug it in blind. Turns out what I plugged the USB cable into was not the USB port ... *doH!*
