[SOLVED] HP Proliant N40L MicroServer native support

PS: i have a 4tb HDD with a lot of movies, music... in nl54, will i lose it?

If you are planning to install XPEnology on this drive, it will be formatted and erase everything on it.

To save your files, either first copy them to another storage for backup, or remove this drive, install xpehnology to another disk(s) first, then connect your 4TB drive via USB, copy all the files to NAS. Finaly install drive back and add it XPEnology as separate volume or extend existing volume to it.

Hi Guys,

Can someone please tell me what is the most stable release of Xpenology for HP Microserver N40L. Has the USB issue been fixed now where the USB had to be taken out before restarting the server. I would like it to just work without any tinkering.

Thanks

I have issues adding a third data disk to DSM. It shows up correctly in ESXi, but it doesn't show up in DSM. Are there specific SCSI "coordinates" to use for it to work ? And I checked the BIOS, SATA IDE Combined mode is on Disabled. :-/

I also posted a topic on the main page, but I figured I would get more specific answers on this topic, considering I'm using an N54L.

Hello shteve and thanks for taking the time to answer me.

I've found the solution to my problem. The thing is, I used a wrong .pat file for the installation of DSM, and I ended up emulating a DS214Play NAS, which is only able to handle two disks... After upgrading to the correct version of 5.0 4493, I can add more disks.

I have had something simular. What I did was, I unplugged the drive, formatted it on another computer, plugged in the empty drive and added this drive to the pool. It started to recalculate and distribute all the files and the filesystem is working again.

I use the SHR-1 'filesystem'.

I received my Microserver Gen 8 yesterday, I just put in the usb stick in the onboard USB slot, put in the hard drives in the same order and booted the machine.

everything seems to be working just awesome. I still have to test the usb3 connectors to see if they work and give good speeds.

In other words, very happy about this purchase!

Just one quick question, and I hope no one minds me asking, is there such a thing as an iLO4 advanced keygen? using remote administration is not needed that often but it is awesome and could come in handy when updating the software and I don't want to attach a monitor .

edit: I didn't post this to brag or anything. I just wanted to let you know that the system works in case you want to upgrade your N36L, N40L or N54L microserver. It uses more power but its a lot faster. I can watch a full hd (sin city) from my iphone using plex. This was undoable on my N36L.

Nice. The N54 is apparently 70% faster than the N36, and the Gen 8 about 70% faster than the N54. I'm able to watch 1080p shows on my LG G2 with my N54 as the server as there's no recoding required. Maybe worth a new phone rather than a new server if you need to transcode?

shteve, i have an iPhone 5 but possibly some wrong settings in the plex server. Because I got 100% cpu usage on the nas if I used the plex HT system on a laptop connected to LAN.

fjf, thanks for the link! I'll have a look at it! I don't find it very noisy at idle speeds.. But it does make a LOT of noise when on full speed. We'll see how it goes when the summer returns!

Also, I tried a usb3 mobile harddisk and it worked very good! I cant tell you how fast it was but I copied some games and that went a lot faster then usb2!

You could take a look at this tread http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2690. See Robjo's post and link for a cheap card - here is an up to date link to the same seller PCIE low profile USB3 with NEC Chip. It works in the N40L using the latest Nanoboot, so it should work in the N54L without an issue. You will also need a power cable to connect up to the Molex on the card.

Just to report back, I installed it this morning, it works flawlessly out of the box (DSM 5.1-4528 on latest nanoboot, bare metal installation). I used the ODD molex cable to power it, not sure if it's really needed though.

Good to hear you got sorted out.

I assumed it would be OK without the additional power but I had issues without it - which is why I mentioned it in my reply. If you try it without the Molex I would be interested to know if yours works as expected. :?: Mine wouldn't even work with low power devices (USB thumb drives etc.) without the power connected.

There is also a similar card now with an internal extension header which could be useful.

Hi guys, I've been following this PCI-E card 'from the shadows' - glad to see it worked

I presume you are using the white connector on the card to provide the additional power - what is the black connector for?

Also - as you are running DSM5.1-4528 baremetal, as I am now, have you had any issues with the drives not spinning down? My seem to refuse to spin down and I'm not sure why...

Thanks

Hi,

Yes I connected the white molex connector to the ODD power cable (I had to remove a cable tie), the length was perfect. I didn't try it without it, and I'm a bit lazy so I don't think I will try it to disconnect it to see if it works

The black connector purpose is to provide external USB 3.0 ports on cases that offers those ports on the front panel for example. It's not usable in the N54L.

About your spinning down issue, I'm sorry but I won't be of much help, I run Transmission on my NAS with about a thousand torrents on it, so the drives are kinda always busy...
