Rusty Posted February 28, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2017 6.x is not supported on Hyper-V as yet, so no recommendation to make.
Barrow1990 Posted February 28, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted February 28, 2017 6.x is not supported on Hyper-V as yet, so no recommendation to make. So the recommended 1 would be ESXi My options are that i can think of Option 1: Main Nas & Back Up on Same Bare Metal Machines Option 2: Main Nas & Back Up on Separate Bare Metal Machines (Nas Using i5 / BackUp Using i3) Option 3/4: Main Nas in VM & Backup on Bare metal (or opposite) Option 5: Put both in same vm Option 6: Put in separate VM's I want to utilise my i5 & 16GB Ram. So thinking options 1 & 2 are out. I could use both systems and put on esxi and then have main nas and backup running on separate servers but thats abit overkill. But could set up a HA Cluster in DSM. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
roman9999 Posted March 18, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 18, 2017 How's you're project coming along? Have you decided what you're going to set up ?
Barrow1990 Posted March 19, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted March 19, 2017 Im just testing by transferring part of it to a vm. It completely wiped my set up and had to put my backup into a ds212j and reinstall my production 1. All be performance isnt as good now. Think it lost configuration on both. All the more reason to have a back up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Barrow1990 Posted March 29, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted March 29, 2017 Update: Decided to have the following set-up: ESXi 6.0 Intel DQ67OW Motherboard 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance & 1 x 2GB Kingston (Had Lying about) Dual Port Intel Pro 1000 PCI-E Currently got a SAS3041E-HP and a generic 2 port Sata I have 2x500GB, 2x1TB (SHR on Motherboard sata - Pass-Through) 2x2TB (Raid1 on SAS3041E-HP - Pass-Through) Datastore on generic sata card. My question now is do i put all the hard drives with the same set up in the same vm or separate the 2 disk groups? If i go in same vm i will purchase a better sas card to cope with all he disk drives Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Aigor Posted March 29, 2017 Share #8 Posted March 29, 2017 Why there are a lot of messages about DSM into some hypervisor? I suppose it's usefull for testing purpose, i don't think it's' a good idea put some nas sofware on top on Hypervisor, but it's' only a my thought and without polemics. IMHO i prefer ESXi instead of HyperV

IMHO i prefer ESXi instead of HyperV I have an all mighty custom built rig with Windows 10 pro on top, Hyper-V and DSM sitting inside. At it's very basic this allows me to run Kodi from Windows 10 which in turn accesses all media from DSM. I also have several VM's making up a domain for work related purposes. There's no reason why I have DSM at all, I don't really need it since Sab, Sick, PHP can run from Windows. But it's a force of habit and I like it. Barrow1990 Posted March 29, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted March 29, 2017 1 of the main reasons for me is to utilise the hardware its on. You dont need loads of power to run a synology. So i can have synology in a vm with pass-through so i can just put it on bare metal and in theory it should just boot fine. But can also run other stuff on the same host Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
