If you plan never add more than 2 drives, then you should buy a real NAS box, but don't buy Synology, rather buy either Qnap or Asustor which already implemented XBMC and have nicer GUI for beginner

To your main concern, DSM is mainly for NAS devices from Synology so it mostly support Intel-based boards and CPUs like Atom but I've seen a lot of people successfully had DSM on AMD-based, too; however, it would be more questionable when coming to third-party hardware like RAID, network, video, audio cards... but the good news is if everything doesn't work as you expected (or hoped for), you can always turn around and make it into what you first intended to build it for such as HTPC, Media server, File Server... so if your hardware are not very strong, try bare metal guide first or go straight to ESXI if you have very strong CPU and a lot of RAM as I suggested in the provided link viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3608#p21719 BTW, it only takes around 15min to finish the whole installation and with the link above, it would save you hours wander around for guides

Heard the word "Hackintosh" a lot but honestly I never used any Apple products and don't get me wrong, they're just as good as any other products but personally I just feel they're way too expensive for me; might be someday when I would make 100k a month instead a year then I might consider to try some of Apple products like... an iPhone... So far, I didn't really try ESXI yet since bare metal work fine for my first purpose that I just simply "throw" the box up onto the attic to silently wireless backup all OS images of all PCs in house and setup to always have 3 iteration backups for each PC... based on mountain formation in case any PC infected or crash, I can always go back to the previous iteration backup or even full backup...

Might be you setup RAID that needs even number of drives; just a guess

If using MyISAM, it's simply copy and paste database folder(s), so a simple script to copy same database folder to folder1, then folder2 and on next backup will be folder3 and delete folder1, rename 2 to 1 and 3 to 2, so always has 2 latest backups for 1 database. If using InnoDB, you might have to run MySQL_Dump in your script but the concept should be the same. Before MySQL version 5.5, MyISAM is the default storage engine when you create a table without explicitly specify the storage engine. From version 5.5, MySQL uses InnoDB as the default storage engine.

Yep, it's hardware but sound more HDDs than MB or sometimes just SATA cable(s) so easiest troubleshoot is connect each HDD external to other box to see if you can access HDD, and if one of them is fail, you might want to copy all data out since you might have to reinstall DSM

If mainly for MySQL, you should eliminate Win and use database server directly on DSM unless you're not actually using MySQL but MSSQL that's native on Win

Wow, that's a good one I'm not really dedicated on HW so only buy when it's low, I meant extremely low like I only spent 40 bucks for my Xpenology system with 1.6 GHz Atom, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 16GB SSD, 64MB USB, 450W PSU, mini-ITX MB and Case... so it doesn't look as good as yours and still in process to collect HW for a better system with at least i7 ... but believe me, it's never look good like yours since already mentioned that I'm only buying HW when it's extremely low

He he... he he... I'm using 64MB, so it's not even quarter of a GB You should look harder and might able to get (extremely small) 4GB USB FAR (Free After Rebate) so it's free and the good part is that it's not stick out of your case
