  1. Look at the sticky topics. There are links to new downloads on the first posts Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
  2. Yeah i just mentioned 4gig stick as that is about the smallest usb size you can purchase these days...well at least where i am. But yeah as stated if you have a very old usb that is even smaller that will do just fine to. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
  3. I run both bare metal and vm version and there is not much difference in performance if any at all. My vm is very snappy. Think I've given it 4 virtual cpu's and 4gig ram and its on sas drives and i max out the gig interface in both read and write. The other bonus with vm is there is no need for the usb sick. 64gig stick for xpenology is a huge waste...you can use 4 gig and it will be fine...it does not even need to be fast...it's just the firmware part that runs from usb...DSM gets installed on your selected storage hard drives in a 2gig partition...so the usb is literally used only at boot. Vm is just so easy. My 2 cents anyway Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
  4. I had a weird issue with access myself with download station not seeing all folders after i migrated. What fixed it for me was to remove the tick on the shared folders under advanced permissions for "Enable advanced share permissions" tick box. After this I could access all folders as admin again. 5. So a further update on this. It seems DS3615xs works perfectly fine on VMware 6.5 with LAG. All my previous tests above were with the latest loader and DS3617xs. I can confirm however that the DS3615xs loader and DSM work just fine and have been fully upgraded to the latest update (update 4) This has been running stable for over 5 days now. There must be a trigger in the DS3617xs that kills it after a few hours when using LAG. (The countdown bomb) Anyways just an update that the older loader with DS3615xs works great with VM and LAG enabled.
  6. Ok the box was completely trashed the next morning. Synology cannot find the page you are looking for. I tried everything to get it back, to no luck. Steer clear of LAG on VM. I have had to used another server at work with single link for my NAS box now.
  7. OK i got this working!!!! after an entire day of trying all sorts of things. DO NOT add any additional vSwitches......no mater how you configure them, the Synoboot will not get IP or see the network...... PERIOD! does not matter which vSwitch you add it to it or which way you configure it (trust me i tried all variants) will not work. I eventually got my link aggregation working by removing all vSwitches and leaving just one with my management kernel nic added to the same vSwitch and adding in all 4 NIC's to the same vSwitch. Also dont forget if you adding port-channels from the same network switch you have have to setup the NIC teaming to use "Route based on IP Hash" or it will not work!!!. I have 4x 1GIG NIC's aggregated with no issues after doing this. WOW what a frustration!!! but at least i was able to save my storage!! whoooohoooo
  8. HI Guys I have just reconfigured my VM server to have 1 vm switch for management and 1 vm switch for all the server. The server switch i have have added in 2x 1gig NIC's in etherchannel. all my other VM's are working perfectly fine with this. However my DSM wont see network at all. I created a test VM with just the synoboot image and it too will not get an IP. does not matter if i choose VMXNET or e1000 NIC. Has anyone got the DSM working on a VM server using link aggregation (nic teaming) ? Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is on my work box so my storage for work is down....grrrrr

    DSM 6.1.x Loader

No, AMD CPU is not supported on the latest loader. (N54L comes with AMD CPU) Jun has stated there are issues with it and disabled the AMD support. You will have to wait until there is a new loader out with support.

    DSM 6.1.x Loader

WOW!!! that worked. I stumbled on that earlier in the day, but did not go ahead with it as it said it was going to format 2 disks......so i thought it was going to format the large storage one i added and the synoboot drive. (which ive had happen on the old DSM 5.2) Going ahead with that anyway, has allowed me to format and setup the system!!! i have the VM now installed with loader 1.02a2 and DS3617xs and DSM 6.1.1-15101 Update 2 Thanks so much.......i kid you not i have tried everything today for the entire day....i was so frustrated Even tried to get it going on vm workstation and had the same format issue.....was actually packing and and giving up when you posted that Thanks mate

Better yet, could one of you guys with a working VM in ESXI 6.5 with the latest loader, please export an .ova of that and send me a link to it. This will be the quickest way for me to get going on the new loader in VM Pretty Please I have spend the entire day now and no matter what i do, i cannot format the drive. Many thanks

    DSM 6.1.x Loader

HI there Sorry if this is a repeat question. Im fine with bare metal installs, but the VM install is kicking my butt. Im trying to install on VMware 6.5 with Jun v1.02-alpha for DS3615xs i get the VM up and see the setup page where i need to insert the PAT file. I downloaded DS3615xs_1501.pat and tried to install that. I then get a failed to format hdd error (35) What i did was to create a folder on my datastore. Then I copied all 4 files from the loader to that folder When importing the VM It seemed corruped as i got network errors and could not delete or edit anything in the vm. I then had to edit the .vmx file and remove all the ethernet config, without doing this the vm would always complain about being part of the incorrect network port. and i could not edit the vm at all. the only way was to delete all the ethernet lines in the .vmx file then upload that to the datastore and import the VM again. then i reinstalled the network and this was ok. I then deleted the disk and re-added it pointing to synoboot.vmdk and setting it as SATA 0:0 and independant - persistent. then i added my storage drive as SCSI 0:0 and dependant mode it boots up fine and i get the initial setup page but when uploading the DSM pat file and starting the install i get the error that it cant format with error 35 Is there a guide someone has put together on how to get the VM installed on vmware 6.5 ? (ive tried searching a bit to no luck) Any assistance would be greatfull. This was after the sugestion to create a temp vm to test my disk expansion etc from my previous question. My existing VM is on the old 6.0 DSM with the original jun loader and i used a .ova file uploaded by korovis which had all the hard work done. So this is my first attempt really at getting this done from the provided loader files. Many thanks

    DSM 6.1.x Loader

Hi Guys I have a question on VM. I have a successful system running with Jun's original Loader in VM (VMware 6.5) with DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 9 I initially setup one virtual hdd from my datastore at 300Gig but have a need for more space. I have over 700gig free on my datastore and want to increase this drive to 500gig or 600gig. Can i do this ? Will the synology pick this up and use the additional space ? I know i could just add another virtual disk and provision it but id rather have one volume. I dont want to lose the data so thought id ask here if anyone has done this, before I attempted it and possibly trash my system and data ? Many thanks

Hi There There are allot of services or packages that prevent hdd hibernation from occurring. I also have a Gen8 but never saw my drives enter hibernation. I have a real synology DS216J and it does hibernate the drives....but very rarely. Like once or twice a day maybe, sometimes not at all for 2 or 3 days. So it depends very much on what services or packages you are using. I found this on the Synology site which might help explain this : https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/What_stops_my_Synology_NAS_from_entering_System_Hibernation
  15. I agree with "opty" Transcoding all your content with handbrake to mp4 is the way to go. I now transcode all my downloads as and when i get them with Handbrake. i went from 5tb used to under 1.2tb after i transcoded all my content. Lots of it was HD movies in the old 4.7 - 8.5gig range and they came way down to like 1.2gig and quality is still superb as the new codecs (h264) are really good these days. if you have a tiny pc or phone or whatever you can use kodi to play those movies or series directly from the NAS with minimal overhead (it will barely affect even the smallest of cpu). I have a HP Gen8 and it is great and ran plex fine, but im all about power saving these days so i actually got myself the bottom of the range real synology to run as my main NAS (DS216J) and it can handle many streams (i have 4 tv's) and its only got a 1ghz dual core cpu and it does not even break a sweat when all of them are streaming content. Do yourself a favour and install kodi and get to know it and read up on it....it will change your life. It can be installed on windows, mac, android and linux. you can use a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 with arm cpu with Kodi and its brilliant (i used 4 of these before moving to the fire tv's). I use Fire TV units on my TV's with Kodi side loaded. Id say if you got into the Kodi / handbrake trancoding (which is fun to learn anyway) you can get away with a very small spec NAS and save money on hardware and power but just my 2 cents worth
